Fame, Fortune, and Gender: Women Artists in History
Art Talks by Art Historian, Dee Kilgo, Ph.D.
Perpetuating the age-old belief that artistic genius was the sole province of male artists, historians through the ages routinely excluded women artists from their rosters of period superstars. In recent decades, new scholarship has exposed this gender bias by bringing to light the extraordinary achievements of numerous women artists throughout history. Dee’s lectures highlight the accomplishments of some of these remarkable women and the role that gender has played in art history.
Dee Kilgo is Professor Emerita and Retired Asst. Dean of the College of Fine Arts, Illinois State University.
Her popular programs make art history accessible, fun, and engaging! An Alton native, Dee lives in Godfrey and Dunedin, Florida.
Fame, Fortune, and Gender I - Sunday, September 10, 3:00 - 4:30
In Dee's overview of art styles from the Renaissance through Impressionism, you'll meet an amazing cast of once-forgotten women who were among the most celebrated artists of their time. Hear their fascinating stories and marvel at what they achieved when women had little or no access to traditional art training.
Fame, Fortune, and Gender II - Sunday, September 24, 3:00 - 4:30
Lecture II examines the role and status of women artists in early 20th-century modernist movements in Europe and in mid-century avant-garde movements in America. You’ll also learn about the "Guerrilla Girls” colorful foray and the far-reaching impact that the Feminist Art Movement of the '70s had on Post-Modernism and on gender bias in the gallery and museum world.
Doors open at 2:30. Art Talk at 3pm.
Stay after to mingle, meet the artists, and view the current exhibit WOMEN SPEAK.
